Students Partner with the Northeast Richland Lions Club and Walmart

Birdville ISD students have partnered with the Northeast Richland Lions Club and Walmart on Rufe Snow and 820 to take up used eye glasses throughout the school district.  During the month of October, students collected 648 pairs of glasses for those in need. Walmart will send the glasses to the Texas Lions Eyeglasses Recycling Center in Midland. The recycling center organizes optical training teams composed of Lions, doctors and opticians to work with Lions throughout Texas and in developing countries to redistribute the donated eyeglasses to those who need them.

2012-13 Calendar Options

The district is no longer accepting comments. Thank you for your feedback.

The 2012-13 Calendar Committee has created three calendar options to be reviewed by community, staff, parents, and students.  Each calendar has slight differences related to holidays and professional learning days for teachers.

Due to the restraints of the calendar for 2012-13, graduation will occur prior to the last day of school.  Graduating seniors will take exams prior to May 26 and will not be required to attend after May 24.

Please review the following calendars and keep in mind that the following requirements must be met when offering alternative suggestions.

Texas Education Code 25.0811: First day of instruction. (a) A school district may not begin instruction for students for a school year before the fourth Monday in August unless the district operates a year-round system under Section 25.085.

· 2012 Start Date – August 27, 2012 (fourth Monday)

· 2013 Graduation Date – May 26, 2013

· 175 days of instruction for students

· State Waiver for 5 professional learning days that must occur after August 27 and before the last day of instruction. (If we decrease these days, we have to increase student instructional days. Instructional days + State Waivers Days must equal 180 days)

· Total 187 work days for campus staff

· 4 professional learning days prior to the start of school (These are different from the state waiver days.)

· 3 staff work days (prior to the start of school and/or during the school year)

· 2 inclement weather make-up days (second semester)

· Holidays/Break

o   Labor Day

o   Thanksgiving

o   Christmas

o   Martin Luther King Day

o   Spring Break

o   Memorial Day

Please review the three calendar options and list your comments or concerns below.  All comments will be monitored by district personnel before posting on the blog.  Thank you for your input.

Green Valley Elementary Recognized

Green Valley Elementary Recognized as a 2011 NCEA Higher Performing School

Green_ValleyThe National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA), a department of ACT, Inc., recognized Green Valley Elementary as a 2011 NCEA Higher Performing School. Green Valley received Higher Performing (HP) recognition in the following area:

Higher performing in both Commended and growth in writing.

The Higher Performing Schools (formerly known as Just for the Kids Schools) are identified by two measures: consistent improvement in student achievement from previous years (growth) and/or absolute student achievement using the school’s Commended Performance results on the spring 2009-2011 TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) test. NCEA’s higher performing methodology controls for school and student demographics to allow for an apples-to-apples comparison of school achievement and to demonstrate that with the commitment of educators, all schools can have success no matter the zip code. NCEA provided award certificates to each Higher Performing School and the district.
