Birdville ISD students earn national honors
BISD is proud to announce it has three National Merit Semifinalists and 13 National Merit Commended Scholars and one National Hispanic Scholar for the 2015-16 school year.
Nearly 1.5 million juniors in 22,000 high schools across the country entered the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program last year by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors received the prestigious designation of becoming a semifinalist this year.
To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

A Piece of My Heart by Shirley Lauro is a powerful, true drama based on the book of the same name by Keith Walker. The play tells the accounts of six women and their experiences with the Vietnam War: two Army nurses, an Army officer, a Navy nurse, a member of the Red Cross, and a singer. The script portrays each young woman before, during, and after her tour in a war-torn nation. Other cast members play a well-rounded ensemble representing others affected by the war. The show is moving and powerful, with all of the brutality and raw honesty that comes with the history that the play describes.
We are attempting to plan short panel discussion with a number of Vietnam War veterans to discuss their experiences and enlighten our community to follow our performance on Sunday, October 18. If you are in contact with any veterans that would be interested in participating in the panel, please invite them to attend and let me know! We would love to be able to offer our students a chance for this unique and respected perspective to accompany our production.
Thanks again for your continued support of the Birdville High School Theatre Department!
