BISD is accepting feedback on the proposed 2013-14 calendars through 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30.
402The Calendar Committee is no longer accepting comments.
The 2013-14 Calendar Committee has created three calendar options to be reviewed by community, staff, parents, and students. Each calendar has slight differences related to holidays and professional learning days for teachers.
Due to the restraints of the 2013-14 calendar, graduation will occur prior to the last day of school on the Calendar C option.
Please provide the district your comments on the following calendar options.
Texas Education Code 25.0811: First day of instruction. (a) A school district may not begin instruction for students for a school year before the fourth Monday in August unless the district operates a year-round system under Section 25.085.

option C is preferred. A is ok, but definitely not B. Coming back for a 1/2 week during the winter break is more probable for too many absences.
Option A
Being a 200 day employee this shortens our summer. I would prefer calendar A. 2 weeks is much better for Christmas Break. Also, many schools are not off that first week in June, and it’s a great time to travel if you want to beat the crowds.
I vote for option C
as a student i would like B!!!!!!
Option C!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Our family prefers A
Option A
I prefer Option A.
I perfer C, because it gives us more time for the holidays with our families, especially when they are all out of town.
Option C
+1 week off for Thanksgiving
+2 weeks off for Christmas
+Not working on the May 31st
-Working into June
Easy decision- C is the best!
Calendar C.
We prefer Option C.
I like Option A.
Go Class of 2014
My son will be a senior next year. If he’s NOT expected to be in school after graduation, I’ll support Option C. But if you’re expecting seniors to attend after graduation, then our family will vote for Option A
Option C
Option B First Choice
Option C Second Choice
First Choice B
Second Choice C
Showed my kids the three options and we all vote for option “C”!
So as a family, that’s five votes for C, please! Thanks!
C please
I prefer C
C is by far the best! We get to spend time with our families during both holidays. I do not care for B at all.
I prefer option C. As a high school student of divorced parents I need both the 1 week of thanksgiving and the 2 weeks of Christmas to be able to see my entire family on both sides. This year has really discouraged me so far with the change. I’m voting for option C.
Option C
Option C.
Option a is great. I don’t want to be in school past May which is the reason why I didn’t pick option c
I prefer Option A.
Honestly I am not looking forward to the short Christmas break this year. It is not enough time off to rest and more importantly, to visit with my children who are away at college.
The week for Thanksgiving will be great, but I would rather work Mon & Tues. I understand due to the mandated days of service & instruction, we can not have both without extending the school year into June. Extending the school year, interferes with college calendars, child visitations, and summer enrichment activities.
I like option C.
Option A. Option C is my second choice, but with option C band camps get pushed back and it messes with other summer activitys.
C or A please!
Not that the calendar committee listens to feedback, but my choice is A or C. Less than 2 weeks at Christmas is unacceptable!!!!!
Option A is by far my first choice. My second choice is Option C.
I prefer Option C by far. As a family that travels for holidays, 2 weeks at Christmas is very important, and one week at Thanksgiving is helpful, too. Option A is my second choice, and B is a very distant third. Half weeks like the ones in Options A and B are awkward, and many students are gone because their families travel, too.
I know I may be alone in this opinion, but I’d rather end the school day even one day later and get Columbus Day off in October (for teachers). I’ve heard from several teachers that one day in October would be SO helpful in feeling recharged and ready to go for the 2nd six weeks. It also seems to make more sense for finals since we’ve recently chagned from two to three days of finals. I know it’s too late for this calendar, but maybe a consideration for the next one…?
We prefer option A
We prefer option A
Definitely Option A! I don’t want school to go into June and love the 2 full weeks at Christmas.
Option A!!! Option C would be my second choice. Most universities don’t get a whole week at Thanksgiving, so with two in college as well as one in middle school, I much prefer having the family time together at Christmas. Having a longer Christmas break is so very needed for students and staff.
I vote for option C.
Thank you!!
Option C looks great! Option A is what we are accustomed to and we know works. Just throw out Option B.
I prefer the one that lets me run my “camps” in the summer more so option A it is or C. I like thanksgiving too
I prefer Option A.
I prefer Option A. Thank you for the choices.
I like Option A the best. It seems that a lot of the comments are from teachers who talk about needing the extra time off to prepare for their students. The district should also consider working parents who aren’t teachers. We don’t have tons of time off during holidays, Spring Break, and Summer like teachers do. Therefore, it is difficult for working parents to find and/or pay for additional daycare for those extra days off during Thanksgiving. In addition, summer camps tend to start the first week of June so that would push some kids out of those camps. Thanks for the opportunity to voice our opinion!
BEING A BUS DRIVER I PREFER OPITION A
I prefer option A.
Schedule A.
The full week at Thanksgiving followed by 2 full weeks at Christmas is too much for working parents and promotes the laid-back attitude that most teachers gripe about in December. It also doesn’t make sense to have Seniors return to school after Graduation. That eliminates most of the celebratory feeling of finality on graduation weekend.
option A Please
I prefer options B or C. I really like having a week for Thanksgiving. More time at Christmas is a tradeoff for not having to go in June, so either one works for me. As the wife of a teacher and a mom of an elementary scholar, these work best for us.
C
A my second choice
C
option c
Option C
Option C! I like that we have full weeks for both holidays! I don’t mind getting out in June.
Option A
The return on attending the first few days of June far outweigh the lost days of travel. I graduated before the last day of classes over 30 years ago. It was not an issue then. Not enough travel time being off the day before Thanksgiving. I am amazed at the number of absences on these days. I am interested in the attendance rate for the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving. My family and friends like C then A. C seems like a more relaxed schedule.
I like Option C. Students and Teachers need those breaks during the school year and the 3 extra days at the end of the school year will not kill anyone.
Option C
I prefer C
I prefer Option A, as a parent and teacher with BISD.
Calendar C
Option C then A, thanks for asking our opinion!
Option A definitely.
Option C!
I prefer C
A please. I will gladly give up the full week of Thanksgiving to have 2 full weeks at Christmas. I really don’t like coming back the day after the first of January.
I don’t mind calendar C, but I am afraid we will loose a lot of attendance if we go into June.
I prefer Option C
I like option C
Option A
As a student, I hear all of the complains about only having one and a half weeks for Christmas. There is a lot of it. I actually agree that we should have one week for Thanksgiving, but I really do like having TWO weeks for Christmas. There is more time to travel and to see family. So, I prefer option C.
Option C has many benefits: Long Thanksgiving break and three weekends during the Christmas break. Lots of family gatherings during that time even on New Years Day so having a couple extra days off after New Years is healthy for all families.
Since we don’t start school until late in August I don’t think it is an issue for students to go to school through the first week of June; in fact, for many families I think it would be welcome. One more week at the end of the year is a good trade off for some nice long breaks during the school year. It may help both staff and student attendance rates.
C
Option C will give parents more options.
I like Calendar A, with C being my second choice. BISD has never had a full week off for Thanksgiving until this year. Going back to 3 days at Thanksgiving, 2 weeks at Christmas and then being finished by June 1 is more like what we have done in the past.
Option A works best for us. We still like the calendar from years ago with the winter break in frbruary and the abbreviated summer but I guess with the state mandated start date, we can’t do that anymore.
I PREFER Option A
I vote for Calendar A, I beleive with B and C, we are going to have many students absend on the days after New Years and the 1/2 days at the end of the year.
Option A
I agree with the other posts selecting calendar option “C”.
Option A
As a parent and teacher, I prefer option C. This gives me the most time with my kids during the holidays and ensures I don’t have to make daycare arrangements since they are in another school district and have the whole week at Thanksgving and 2 weeks at Christmas. This gives students and teachers a time to recharge and still feel they had an enjoyable holiday season with their families.
Option C…as a teacher and a parent, this gives me the most time off with my kids. This also helps to ensure that daycare won’t be an issue since they are in another school district and always have a week at Thanksgiving and 2 weeks at Christmas.
“C”!!!!!!!
I prefer option A
Calendar A – my middle schooler wants 2 weeks at Christmas.
option C
We prefer Option A. It is easier to travel and visit family with 2 full weeks at Christmas. We also prefer the school year finishing in May allowing summer activities and vacations to begin.
i perfer option C. I believe that this is a good option for both parents and students
I prefer option A. Having a couple extra days to teach before the holidays helps keep them going in the right direction academically and then allows time to travel on the Christmas Break. Thanks for the options and link to reply!
C! C! C! please that’s amazing forn my kids! they’re always so stressed out because of 3 day or half week breaks
I prefer Option B
Calendar B
Option A
I prefer A
Although, the week long break for Thanksgiving this year gives teachers and families much more needed time to prepare for the major holiday, I have to go with option A. The two weeks off for Christmas is really, badly needed and it’s what people are use to having. It, also, gives military families (if they’re lucky enough to be home for Xmas) more time to spend together. And, let’s face it, making seniors go back to school after graduation in JUST PLAIN RIDICULOUS! It would take all the excitement and sense of finality out of one of the most important events in a person’s life.
Seniors don’t have to go back after graduation.
Definitely A as first choice and C as second choice. B really causes problems for us whose custody at Christmas vacation is split in half.
C.
As an educator and mom, I prefer option C.
I like option C.
Option C! Please think of teachers who have children and would like to be off at the same time they are. Christmas is a special time for my family and I would like to be able to enjoy all of it with them. My husband works in a different district and we don’t get to spend all of the holiday break together because the district wants to be out by June 1st. I would rather have one more week of school at the end then work on Saturdays and Sundays (Graduation).
A is the better calendar. If your schools’ team is in the football playoffs, or you have a basketball player, the longer holiday is meaningless due to practices and games. Plus, summer fever sets into the kids the first of May. Keeping them through the first full week of June is harder on the teachers than missing two days of Thanksgiving break!
We like C with A as our second choice
I like option A.
Option C
Option A
Option C
Option C
Option C..a week off for Thanksgiving and two for Christmas! Also, I don’t mind working that first week of June.
I prefer option C. As a teacher, I agree with what others have said, it’s nice to have the full week at Thanksgiving and it’s too difficult to return from a holiday mid-week.
Option C
Calendar A, get out early and not all parents have at week off at thanksgiving it also gives us 2 weeks at christmas
Calendar A
i prefer calendar A.
C vote, having a full memorial week end would be great! 2 weeks for Christmas (3 would be better) and 1 week for Thanksgiving, nice. the majority of people don’t go on crusies or out of state, sounds like a luxury and that is fine if you can afford it. I remember graduating June 2 and that ok. Seniors were prevy to not returning. All in all it should be what is best for the students and helpful to teachers
Option A.. Graduating BEFORE classes are officially done, not exciting. Love the long holiday breaks, you get to spend more family time, especially if you travel. I think you should post a VOTE on them, not just a “response” on the site.
Option B. Like full week at Thanksgiving and being out before June – before others districts. Am fine with returning on Jan 2. Easier to transition back into school mode/routines with two days of the week left then having a whole week. Besides, there is a holiday two weeks later.
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to voice our preferences.
I vote for calendar C.
I vote C
Anything as long as there is two weeks at Christmas is okay with me. B looks the best to me. I don’t think kids will show up to the two half days in June with option C.
B does not have 2 weeks at Christmas BTW.
Option A! There is something wonderful about finishing school in May! And I would rather have a longer Christmas break than Thanksgiving break.
I like option C. I hope our choices are truly considered this time. The schedule we have this year made my annual Christmas trip home very difficult. However, I am glad we have multiple days off to enjoy the holidays. I think option C is the best of both worlds, especially since we do not get the Fall break with the students. Therefore by the time we get to Thanksgiving and Christmas we truly are in need of an extended break.
Option C
Prefer option A
Option C
Option A
I so appreciate the opportunity to leave feedback on the proposed calendars! I pick calendar A because we travel for two weeks to see family at Christmas every year but do not need the travel time at Thanksgiving. Calendar C would be acceptable but I wonder if is a good idea to have so much time off so close together. Thank you for considering our comments.
I want two weeks at Christmas back! I was so dissapointed to see our time was shortened this year at Christmas. I like option C or A the best. It also gives teachers 3 work days before school starts! That time is needed badly by teachers.
I vote option C. I like having 2 full weeks at Christmas that when family usually comes to visit. I hate having to cut time with the great-grandparents short.
option C, definately! Give me more time with the kids, when I’m off since I work LONG hours during their summer breaks.
I prefer Option B. Thank you for allowing our feedback.
Option a
Option A : two weeks at Christmas much needed!!
Option A is by far the best. As an educator, I think we need two full weeks at Christmas and we don’t want to go into June.
I prefer option C first, and option A second.
Calendar A. I am prefer 2 weeks at Christmas. We are having a short Christmas break this year and I don’t like it.
Option A
I go with option c
I think Calendar A or C would be a better option. A definite NO to Calendar B.
B because you still get the longer breaks 2nd choice would be c
Meant a or c NOT b!!!
I vote for option C. Having a week off for Thanksgiving, and a full 2 weeks off for Christmas is golden for us who travel. Don’t mind going into June. Thank you for the options.
I like Option C. I like the longer holiday breaks.
Calendar A, I really love having my two full weeks at Christmas!
I vote for A.
I vote option C!!! I am a teacher and having those breaks for Thanksgiving and Christmas are SO needed. Also, it isn’t that much longer into June and most other districts go till June now too.
We prefer Option A. It is better for students and teachers.
As a teacher, I completely agree with Calendar A being the best for teachers and students. Calendar C would not be good because shortening the number of instructional days before the STAAR test is a mistake. Then that prolongs the number of days after the STAAR test, and by then the students are done. They are exhausted and ready for summer break.
Calendar B is bad because so many people travel to see family at Christmas time, and it would create a lot of student absences when families couldn’t get back in time for school. Especially families that travel to Mexico. I think family time needs to be preserved.
Option C
Option A
As a district employee who works a 200 day calendar instead of the teacher calendar of 187 days, I prefer Calendar A. This will at least allow us, as well as those on a 220 day calendar, more time in the summer.
Thanks for always allowing us to have an opinion.
Option C then A.
As a teacher, our first break has been a long time coming. It feels good to know we have a whole week off this year for Thanksgiving. We are so ready. I also dread going back to school in the middle of the week after Christmas. I choose option C for the fact we would get a whole week at Thanksgiving and two weeks at Christmas. It’s just better to start back on Mondays. However, I think elementary attendance the last two half days will be a problem with option C.
A-Thank you
My daughter who will be a Senior prefers option C and my daughter who will be a freshman also prefers option C due to the length of the Thanksgiving Holiday and Christmas Holiday break. The last day of school is in June and this is not an issue for my Senior student and the other children will be just fine attending school for two half days. Not a big deal.
I prefer option A. Having a week at Thanksgiving is nice, but having 3 weeks off out of 6 during the holidays is scheduled too close together. I understand many families travel during these times and having two weeks around Christmas would provide this time. In addition, having students graduate before they finish their courses seems to lessen the excitement of the occasion, knowing that there are two days left of school; not to mention the difficulty in maintaining focus the later the school year continues. I understand there isn’t a perfect answer, and I appreciate all the hard work that the calendar committee has put into providing viable options.
Seniors don’t have to go back for those two half days after graduation.
Calendar A
Option A
Either calendar A or B, going into June is just wrong!!
I have always said I don’t mind working into june so we have more breaks during the school year. the short breaks help reduce stress that build. The really long summer just gives the kids too much down time from learning. I am giving my vote for C- thanks!
Calendar B
Option A works the best for us. Option B is our second pick.
B
Option C
I vote for C , and the 2ND option is A, Thanks for asking.
I prefer Calendar C. I do not mind going into the first 3 days of June for school in order to get the full time off for the holidays. I love having the week for Thanksgiving, it makes no sense to go to school Monday and Tuesday that week. The 2 weeks for Christmas is an absolute must, especially for travels and preparations that come with it. Do not mind the kids going to school for a couple of days in June to get the longer breaks. Plus, most other schools are going into June anyway so that would put us almost on the same schedule, like we are with Spring Break.
We prefer the calendar Option B; for one thing, because of the full week off at Thanksgiving. Option B also has enough time off at Christmas, even if you are traveling out of state. And, we especially want to be done with school before June. Thanks for the opportunity to weigh in..
Ditto
Calendar A
I prefer A… Thank you
We prefer A. A offers breaks that are spaced out instead of more days off within a month and a half for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Also, no classes in the month of June. Seniors graduate and are done June 1. 2nd choice, is B. Thank you for asking our opinion.
Option C would work best for us. Really need the full week of Thanksgiving off when you have out of state family. Thanks for soliciting feedback from all concerned parties.
C
Option A
C works best for us.
We prefer C -longerThanksgiving and Christmas breaks!
I prefer option A.
I vote for Option C. I like the extended Thanksgiving Holiday, as this gives us teachers more time to recoup and prepare for the remaining piece of the semester. I’m also a HUGE fan of the extended Christmas Holiday, for several reasons: 1) I’m having a baby this January, so being able to spend more quality time with him over his first Holiday would be WONDERFUL! 2) I teach special education and having the kids come back for 2 days after a week and half break never works out well. They have such a difficult time getting back into the ‘swing of things’ that it would be a BLESSING for us all. 3) More time off is always nice for teachers as it gives us more time to prepare for our students.
I have no problem going into the first week of June. Most school districts in our area do. I’d rather have more time off during the year for planning and spending time with my family and go into the summer a bit than to get out earlier and have shortened breaks.
Option C
Option C.
Option C!
option c gives one week break at Thanksgiving and two weeks at Christmas. At both times, this is a much needed break and allows family time or vacations. If seniors don’t come back to school after graduation, then this is a great compromise for all students. I vote option c.
Option C Full week at Thanksgiving is a must! And two weeks at Christmas is a must! I feel our teachers need this. Love not having Graduation during Memorial Day Weekend!
I vote for option C!!!!
I prefer option A. Not all parents get the whole week off at Thanksgiving and have to arrange child care. 2 weeks off at Christmas is nice to visit family. Also, seniors should not graduate before finishing their classes. Thanks for asking our opinion!
I’m wondering why there is no fall break since the end date is in June and not May? Just curious.
Option A first choice, B is second
The sooner we can finish the year after Spring Break and time change with longer days, the better! Everyone feels very ready to be done!
If we could get rid of the half days for elementary students, that would give us 2 more days. Many districts have worked this out, I would LOVE it if we could try it. Lots and lots of negatives and expenses to having those half days.
Thank you for considering our thoughts!
I choose Calendar A.
Option A is first coice B is 2nd. EVERYONE feels so finished after Spring Break and time change with longer spring days… to have to go to school any days in June at all feels like a beating! The sooner we finish the year, the better!
And please oh please can we end the half days for elementary kids! Many many districts have worked this out. I would love it if we could as well, for the students’, teachers’ and parents’ sake! This would give us 2 more days!
Option A, okay with 3 days for thanksgiving as long as Christmas is still 2 weeks and no school after graduation.
I vote for C.
I prefer Calendar A. Thanks for hearing our voices.
Sorry Option B, just noticed students would still have school after graduation
Calendar C please.
C please. Frankly, I hate summer in Texas, would rather have the months of November and December off and be in school all summer. : )
Option “C”
Option C
Option C! Students need the full 2 weeks at Christmas and it’s also nice to have the full week of Thanksgiving. All of the options have them going back after Memorial Day so it doesn’t really matter. Option A would be 2nd choice…..PLEASE do not shorten the Christmas break.
Option B. Having the full week at Thanksgiving and the way Christmas falls the 1 1/2 weeks in December is fine. Don’t want to have school go into June.
I prefer option C, and then A as a second choice. Two weeks at Christmas is important to our family. Thank you!
I prefer option A…too many people plan vacations starting in June.
Option A
Option C please.
Calendar A looks great! No June school, 2 weeks at Christmas! I like the 2 days before Thanksgiving for lots of arts & crafts and fun activities talking about traditions!
I agree with Option C
I choose option C. I have a question though. Why is spring break so early? On every option it was the week of the 10th-14th. I would like to have it the week of the 17th -21st.
I would prefer option A. It is better to end before June. I, also, like have two weeks at Christmas.
My vote is option C
OPTION AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!
VOTE for C….
As a EA I vote for C,But you dont have to take away MLK day we should still have that day OFF!! Having to 2 weeks off for Thanksgiving and Christmas is very nice..It seem that when we get more days off they always take a day from somewhere durning to school year..
I choose option A.
thanks
Calendar “C” is my choice.
Calendar “C” is my choice.
I think Option C is by far the best. Staff & students/families need a week at Thanksgiving and 2 full weeks at Christmas. I am also interested to see how this year’s attendence goes with only 1 1/2 weeks of vacation time at Christmas. Thanks for the opportunity to provide feedback!
I think it’s very important, psychologically, to have the two week break at Christmas, and to be finished by the end of May, so I vote for calendar A!
I vote A.
I like option A.
Referring to option B: We are already hearing from kids “my parents aren’t making me come to school those two days” (meaning at the end of Christmas break). Please don’t do this shortened Christmas break again next year for this reason. It’s a waste of 2 instructional days when students don’t show up. I’m hoping they do, but I’m betting we have many who don’t come.
I encourage district officials to see what the absence rate across the district is on January 3 & 4.
I would like to see the attendance rate for the half days on 12/20 and 12/21. The six weeks is not ending until Jan so what’s the motivation to come on those December half days if there are no exams?
I vote for A…
I vote for A….
Option B
I vote for option C
Option C is the best. So what if we have to go 3 days in June? Better to have a nice holiday at Thanksgiving and Christmas when the weather is nice.
Option C is my preference
C it’s by far the best option!!
Option C. Gives me the opportunity to be with my family at Thanksgiving.
Option C
I choose Option A. There should be NO SCHOOL in June. This is a chance for families to spend that first week at he beach or on a cruise before the “summer” rates kick in. OPTION C IS THE DEVIL.
C please!
“C” I prefer more time during the year as our child.
A!!! Please
Definitely C!
I like option C. Many of our families will leave town for holidays whether or not we have scheduled days off, so less than a week at Thanksgiving and less than two weeks at Christmas will lead to increased absenteeism.
Option C please.
I think Option C is best for staff and kids. Staff & students/families need a week at Thanksgiving and 2 full weeks at Christmas. It energizes them for the Spring Semester! Thanks for the opportunity to provide feedback.
Option A
I vote A
Option A – please!
Option A
I don’t think everyone is realizing that version C has us working most of the first week of June?
Vote for C! No brainer!
I like option A.
I like option B.
I like Option A. I agree that it makes no sense for the SR’s to graduate before school is actually over!
I think Calendar C is the best for us. tahnk you!
My vote is for Option A. Option B doesn’t allow for a full two weeks at Christmas, and Option C doesn’t have us out until June…ugh!
Definitely Option A…
C please
I vote for A. I like having a full 2 weeks for Christmas and still getting out at the end of May.
Option C
I love option C
Calender C!
A whole week at Thanksgiving sounds wonderful right now, and I get board home for 2 weeks at Christmas. I relly liike the way it is this year and that is B. I vote for B!
I vote Option A- having all of June and July is wonderful!
I like option B.
Option A please. The school year still ends in May, Christmas vacation is extended, allowing for those who travel to come back later in the week, AFTER New Years day.
I prefer option A.
I prefer calendar “C”. I believe there is a great liklihood of students missing the two days after Jan. 1st to finish holiday visits-that puts everyone behind, and requires us to reteach what is covered those days. The days after graduation’ in Calendar C are 1/2 days for students, and would be less likely to have concepts taught that would hurt students if they were to miss. Missing school in January is huge.
Thank you for asking us.
I vote C.
I prefer C.
Definitely A or C. Having such a short Christmas break this year is going to be hard. Having a short Thanksgiving break is a lot easier than having a shortened Christmas break. Most colleges don’t get the full week off at Thanksgiving either (So in our case, our college student won’t even be home until the Wednesday of Thanksgiving week.) I just don’t feel that I really need Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving week off, but I sure will need those days after Christmas and New Years!
With calendar C, if having seniors graduate before school is out causes too much trouble for the high schools, then I would say that A is the best calendar ….. unless graduation can be moved to a later date. In that case C would be fine too!
As teacher, I would prefer option A! After the STAAR, not much learning is done because they are exhausted and can’t handle anymore! The kids are ready for the break and so are the teachers! Going until June 5th, would just be chaotic!
I vote for C
C !!!!!!!
Option A works for me. If not that then Option C – I like having two weeks at Christmas like my child who attends another district!!
Option C.
Option C – Thanks for asking our input!
Calendar C….absolutely would rather go a few days into June and have a full week at Thanksgiving, two weeks at Christmas and a full week at Spring Break.
As a BISD teacher and parent, I prefer option A with C as my second choice.
Is that right?????
I would prefer A or B. I agree that classes after graduation would be a problem.
I perfer option C!
I like option C.
Option “C” PLEASE!!!!!!
I think “C” is the best! Option C allows for more family time during the holiday breaks.
I prefer option C.
Option C is my vote. Students (and staff) need breaks during the year more than they need to get out for a long summer vacation a few days early!
As a year-round employee I want to thank you for the week off around the July 4th holiday. That provides such a nice break during the long summer months.
C is better to me , i want 2 weeks at christmas !.
I prefer Option A.
Option C
I am for Option C.
No matter which option is chosen, MLK day is now a staff development day. Of all days to choose from, why take that one? First, Good Friday. Now, MLK.
Option C is the one for me! I want more holiday time with my family!
Half days in June is nothing! Option C is the most family friendly option.
A
I like option B. They’ll get a full week for Thanksgiving holiday and coming back to school on January 2nd, I really can’t see them doing a whole lot with only Thursday and Friday remaining in the week. It’ll take those two days for both teachers and students to get back into it.
C will do for me and my family.
OPTION C! thanksgiving one week, christmas break two weeks!
I like C as well
Option C
Option A please!!! We need a full two weeks at Christmas!
C
Option “C” . As a parent and teacher, option “C” offers more family time during the holidays.
Every year our input is solicited, but I cannot find anyone who voted for the schedule we have this year so I am a bit skeptical if the voting is taken seriously. Be that as it may, it does not make sense to have seniors graduate before the end of school. Not logically anyhow. I vote for A and will be interested to see if the input solicited results in a vote that reflects that.
I agree with Amy, Parents, students and staff all HATE this years schedule and so soliciting input has always been a farce.
I like option C
Gives them time to enjoy the holiday and spend time with their family.
I choose A
I like option C.
I like option C
I like C
Option C is the choice. I do not mind the 2 days into June.
I like “B”
“A”s have always stood for excellence in schools, and with calendar A, it still does! B is good, but calendar C barely passes!
I like option C, which gives students and teachers more time at the holidays to spend with their families. I think being so determined to finish the year before June 1 and cutting out some of the holidays that other districts get leads to more families and teachers planning their own holidays resulting in high absenteeism.
I also believe there should be a holiday observance between Labor Day and Thanksgiving such as Columbus Day. This would improve morale for teachers who are in staff development the Friday before and the day of Columbus Day while their students are enjoying a 4-day weekend and teachers in other districts are getting a 3-day weekend.
If there was a holiday during the Texas State Fair, perhaps the district wouldn’t feel the need to withhold the traditionally free tickets that the fair has always offered to Texas school teachers.
I thank you for the opportunity to express my opinions.
I like options B and C. I honestly prefer B. As a staff member and a district parent the time at the holidays is very importnat for me to refresh and recharge and spending that time with my own children reminds me why I do my job- and its importance. The long summer this past year was wonderful. I was able to put my children in extra activities- including a kindergarten prep class for my middle child and a dislexia reading course for my oldest.
Rachel, B is the one that does not give you time during the holidays (at least not during the Christmas holidays.) A and C both give you a longer time at Christmas.
Option A
Option A works great for our family. Thanks for your consideration!
Option A
Option C
As a teacher and a parent, I like having the week off for Thanksgiving and the 2 full weeks for Winter break. It’s easier to spend time with family and prepare for the holidays.
option A-love 2 weeks at chirstmas and ending in May:)
Option C
Option A please!
option a
I like option C, those breaks are important for teachers and students, and 2 extra days in June is not that far different than ending on the last day of May.
As a high school teacher, it is very difficult to maintain instructional integrity when my students are allowed to graduate before the end of school.
Undoubtedly, most of the responses will be from elementary teachers and parents, but option C would have a significant detriment to the education of any upperclassmen, since so many high school classes are mixed.
Many of the career and technology classes could risk students gaining credit for their certifications and lose valuable credential.
Many of my English students would lose valuable instructional time needed to bridge the gap between high school curriculum standards and necessary skills for some elite college programs.
Some students will not graduate on time because they will have not met the requirements in time and our graduation rates could be significantly impacted.
Overall, I think that choices A and B are better options than C, and I fear the impending detriment to AYP scores and college readiness, if C is selected.
Would calendar C work for you if graduation were moved to some time after the last day of school?
I agree that graduation should happen aftet the last day of school
A ! Thank you!
Thank you for soliciting our feedback. I like calendar B. I especially like the flex day in August – assuming it will be a day where the air is on in the buildings and teachers can prepare their rooms in a little AC. I also like a week at Thanksgiving to allow for travel prior to Thanksgiving Day. Finally the week and a half at Christmas is enough time for families to travel and spend time together and allow respite for all educational stakeholders. Thanks to the committee, as this work CAN NOT possibly be easy.
A – please not C
Option A. Thank you for giving us a voice!
I choose C.
A is the best option. Please not C! The great advantage to being out in June is being able to vacation while most people still have school (that’s how we did Disney World!) . 1.5 weeks is simply not enough for parents splitting the Holidays.
Option A – Not only do I like the holiday breaks better but I will have a senior next year and dread the thought of my senior having to go to school AFTER graduation.
I like “a” or “c”, but, I would really love a year round option!
A
Option A would work really well for us. Thank you for asking us to weigh in!
Option A
Option A would be best!
Option A, PLEASE NOT C, we need to be out in May!!!
As a teacher and BISD mother, I prefer option C.
C
Definitely B!!
Second choice would be C.
Thanks!
I prefer option A
Thanks for the opportunity to vote for Option C. Many of us, teachers and students, have family in various states, some in opposite directions of the continent. Having this time for both holidays would allow time to visit relatives and still allow a little “down time” from all of the school activities — something we have not had in Birdville since I have been here. Thanks for your working so diligently to give us this choice.
I prefer option B. It allows them to have a full week at Thanksgiving and they get out in May.
Option A
Clearly A is the best one for me. 3 days of Thanksgiving, 2 weeks of Christmas, and get out in May. Perfect.
Option A is best for us seeing as we will have senior next year our biggest concern is graduation being after the last day of school.
Calendar C
We like option C,thanks for giving us a opportunity to give input!
we like in this order – B, then A, then C. B – Like having 2 long breaks for Thanksgiving and Christmas (instead of 1 short and 1 long) and prefer to get out of school before June.
I like calendar B
I prefer option C and A is my second choice. Not a fan of B.
A works best for our family
I like calendar A. Thank you for your hard work on this.
I prefer Option A. Thanks for the opportunity to voice an opinion on this.
I prefer option A. Most parents don’t have an entire week off for Thanksgiving, so I don’t see any reason for them to need an entire week off. I also prefer for them to get out in May. I prefer option C as my second choice. I don’t care for the week of Thanksgiving, but we need the 2 weeks at Christmas.
Option C–those longer holiday breaks are necessary. Going into June is not a problem.
I would choose calendar C. I think its important to give the kids time to spend with family around the holidays.
I prefer option A or B, I dont like the getting out in June, for parents that are split it makes it hard for the other parent to realize there is still 2 days of school to attend.
Option C seems to balance days off each semester. Jan 1 is still considered a major holiday and folks are still traveling.
I prefer C.
I prefer Option C with a full week at Thanksgiving and two at Christmas. This year is going to be tough on teachers and students with only seven school days off at Christmas.
Option C
Actually, all three were acceptable choices for everyone……. When we are raising our kids, we have to make certain allowances concerning important things like education and our kids future. Parents can always adapt their schedules accordingly… it’s our job to do the best of our abilities for our family. End of story…. what ever schedule is selected, we adapt and move on… Thank you for very generously working all these schedules out. Lots of painstaking time to do so…… But, unfortunately, not every one will be happy with the things offered………
Well said.
The high school I attended had the senior classes walked graduation a week before school ended every single year. We knew the requirements, as do all seniors, that we still had to pass our classes and make the grades for college and getting the actual diploma. I know it would be chaos though for any high school to implement a new and possibly one time only change, so the district needs to take the HS principals and counselors comments to heart. It will be their responsibility to make that happen and happen with as little turmoil as possible. BUT it can be done and was done yearly where I grew up.
I vote for Option A or C. The two week Christmas break is necessary for split families. The whole week of Thanksgiving is neither here nor there.
Definately Full Week at Thanksgiving and Full 2 weeks for Christmas !!
OPTION C !!
I prefer option A, thank you
Option A is the best choice
B is awesome! It gives the full week for family Thanksgiving travel, and ends in May. Our family takes vacation the last weekend in May every year, so i would prefer not to have to go back in June for 2 HALF DAYS.
I like option C because I like the full week at Thanksgiving and the two full weeks break for christmas.
I would prefer option A. Option A is the calendar that we are more familiar with and has the holidays as we were previously used to (this year, the students have all of Thanksgiving week off, which puts a hardship on some families to plan for additional daycare). I think kids really need the 2 week break at Christmas just to decompress and prepare for the upcoming semester, and traditionally, summer has started before June. I know for our family, especially, this is very important as we travel or have family commitments that would require our children missing school. However, if it fell between option B or C, then option C would be my next preference. While it may not be as ideal because students would be in school until the first week in June, it is far more preferable than option B which only provides students with a week and a half off at Christmas.
I also would like to thank you for the opportunity to have a say in what my children’s schedule will look like for the upcoming year. Thank you!
I prefer Option A, I don’t like the short Christmas break or getting out in June.
I like C. As mentioned by others, most other schools do not get out till June. For family purposes, the full week at Thanksgiving and 2 Weeks at Christmas is a vacation that can be used wisely by all. And what I have found over the last couple of years and I like is that everyone’s Spring Break falls at the same time and that helps with teachers whose children attend in other districts. I know it is difficult for me to find a place for my children to go when I am in school and they are out.
I prefer B or C. Doesn’t make sense to have students at school the week of Thanksgiving on only Mon and Tuesday. Many parents travel and choose to take their kids out of school on these days. Also, as the female of my house, trying to prepare for a meal and guests in only one day (given the many extra hours after and prior to official duty time required this year)…..is very difficult. Not a true rest at all…love having the entire week to prepare for the holidays is wonderful.
I am also interested to see how this year’s attendence goes with only a week and a half of vacation time at Christmas. I have taught here in BISD for a few years and I know we have always had several students leave a week early and come back late due to traveling to see family. Some of these students are traveling aboard so it does make since for them to stay more than just a couple days.
Option A
I choice option b.
I like option A because I see no point in having a full week off for Thanksgiving if it will shorten our Christmas Break or make us get out of school later.
I wish we were able to start at the beginning of August so we could get out of school earlier.
A or C. NOT B!!
I prefer Option C. Gives parents options for travel without disrupting school days.
As a high school student, I prefer option C. With the heavy workload we are presented with, I would prefer having more days off to allow for us to have a break. The extra days in June I would not mind considering our breaks.
I prefer either A or C. I too, really enjoy a week off at Thanksgiving, but only having a week and a half off for Christmas is hard for our family. We have out of town grandparents that get a shortened amount of time with the grandkids when they go back to school on the 2nd. And if we were to travel to see them, it shortens the amount of time we have to spend with our In-town grandparents. Two weeks off gives us plenty of time to share.

Option A or C

I prefer option C.
I like option C. It gives families options vacation times. Children wouldn’t have to miss school.

Option C
I like A or C with 2 full weeks at Christmas… In my case… my sons spend Christmas with their father in Canada… So it’s almost impossible for them to be attending school starting Jan 2nd with the calendar B.
Option B
calander b
I prefer option B, i love the full week at Thanksgiving! Also, always liked being out before memorial day.
None of the calendars allow for the schools to be out by Memorial Day. The holiday in question falls on 5/26 in 2014 and school will either be dismissed on 5/30 or 6/3.

I prefer Option A
I like option C!!

I like option C.
I like A
Love full thanksgiving week and Christmas. It seems all other districts get out in June as well so it would put us on the same schedule.
I prefer option B. I like the full week at Thanksgiving and am fine with having kids return to school on Jan. 2. I like being out before Memorial Day. Great job on presenting three varied options based on the confines of law.
Thank you!
