Smithfield Middle School’s Raider Roundup for incoming sixth-grade students is Friday, Aug. 21 from 8:30 a.m. ‒ noon. Sixth-grade students should be dropped off at the front door of the building and bring a combination lock for their locker. It is a good idea to buy the lock in a pack of two. The second lock, which should be brought on the first day of school for the gym locker, will then have the same combination.
Summer is quickly ending, have you purchased your school supplies?

August 2015, Notes from Dr. Brown
I am excited that another school year is about to begin. BISD staff have been busy getting buildings ready, writing curriculum, training for technology implementation, and yes, even taking some much needed vacation time.
As we prepare for the start of school on Monday, Aug. 24, I want to take a quick look back at the 2014–15 school year. Some of the exciting academic accomplishments are:
- BISD test scores exceeded the state average on STAAR in all subject areas for which results are available.
- Third-grade students exceeded the state average on the STAAR reading test by five percentage points.
- Fifth-grade students exceeded the state average on the STAAR science test by seven percentage points.
- BISD students scored three percentage points above the state average on the Algebra I EOC exam.
- Haltom High School was selected as an Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) National Demonstration School.
- BISD’s Board of Trustees approved the sale/financing of bonds, saving taxpayers millions.
- The Haltom and Richland middle school bands placed in the Top 10 at the Texas Music Educator Association’s CC Middle School Honor Band competition.
- The Birdville Education Foundation awarded 53 Innovative Teacher Grants totaling $118,456.
These are just a few of the great things happening across BISD. In the months ahead, there will be additional celebrations I hope you will share with your friends and family.
Once again, I look forward to having students and staff back for the 2015–16 school year. Remember to slow down as you drive through school zones.
Senator Hancock Names Birdville High Graduate Texas Armed Services Scholarship Recipient
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS – Senator Kelly Hancock has named Jared Henry of Hurst as the recipient of the 2015-2016 Texas Armed Services Scholarship for Senate District 9.
“Jared is an exceptional and disciplined young leader,” said Senator Hancock. “I have no doubt he’ll continue to make our community proud as he serves in the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets and the United States Air Force.”
Henry plans to work as an aeronautical engineer in the Air Force, continuing a family legacy of military service. His great-grandfather served in the Navy during World War I, and his grandfather and two great-uncles served in the Army during the Korean War.
“Serving my country is meaningful to me,” Henry said. “I see it as my duty to protect the very principles that built this country. Because of the generosity of Senator Hancock by way of the Texas Armed Services Scholarship, I can now focus on my academics and training in the Corps.”
The Texas Armed Services Scholarship, administered by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, was created by the Texas Legislature in 2009 to assist promising students from throughout the state who are committed to education and military service.
For more information about the program, contact Senator Hancock’s district office at (817) 514-3804. The application period for the 2016-2017 school year will open next spring.
Senator Hancock represents Senate District 9, which includes portions of Dallas and Tarrant Counties.
