Binion Students are Reminded About the C.O.R.E. values of empathy and kindness

image1OCC Picture

For the seventh straight year, Binion Elementary counselors have encouraged teachers, students and staff to participate in Operation Christmas Child, a non-profit providing gift-filled shoe boxes to be given around the world at Christmas. These shoe boxes will be the only gift many children in other countries will receive. Binion students are reminded about the C.O.R.E. values of empathy and kindness while working to gather the small toys and gifts for the boxes. Each box contains small, age-appropriate gifts of stickers, school supplies, toys, etc. brought by students in the classes. This year Binion has a record 51 boxes filled for this organization–this is 17 more than the previous record.

For College and Career week, and because their teacher is a Southwestern University alumna, Hannah DeArmond’s third-grade class at Binion Elementary Skyped with SU President Edward Burger.  President Burger is co-author of the “GoMath” books and is featured in the “On the Spot” online videos. The class was honored he took time to visit with them, and he was so impressed with the class that he tweeted about their visit.  #futurepirates

Board approves prepaying some bonds saving taxpayers more than $3.8 million

At their regular meeting on Sept. 26, BISD’s Board of Trustees approved the order calling to prepay $4.4 million of outstanding voter-approved bonds originally sold by the district in 2008. This early repayment of bonds, which has a 5 percent rate, will save taxpayers more than $3.875 million in interest payments over the next 18 years. The district will be able to do this without raising the debt service (I&S) tax rate for the 2013-14 school year.

“The Board is pleased to be able to prepay some of the voter-approved bond indebtedness,” Board President Brad Greene said. “This good news comes at the same time the district, for the 10th consecutive year, receives a ‘Superior Achievement’ rating under Texas’ Schools FIRST financial accountability rating system. The superior achievement rating is the state’s highest, demonstrating the quality of BISD’s financial management and reporting system.”
