Bond22 Project Update | Griggs High School

As we prepare for the beginning of the 2024-25 school year, Birdville ISD wants to share updates on several ongoing projects approved by voters in the November 2022 bond. Our first update deals with Shannon High School, recently renamed Bob E. Griggs High School, since it will be completed by the end of 2024.

With the passage of the bond election in November 2022, Birdville ISD purchased The Wisdom Center building at the corner of Denton Highway and Stanley Keller Road. The property was purchased using bond funds with the intent to renovate it for use as the new home of Shannon High School (SHS) which has served as BISD’s alternative high school for more than 30 years. SHS has been located in the old Haltom High School building on Carson Street which is now more than 75 years old.

Once renovations to the new property began, BISD’s board of trustees voted to rename Shannon High School after former superintendent, Dr. Bob E. Griggs. Upon completion of the renovations, the school will relocate to the new Bob E. Griggs High School facility, which will serve as the District’s alternative high school.

Also housed inside the old Shannon High School building are several programs for special needs students. These programs will be relocated to the south end of the new property. The Board voted to name this portion of the building the Linda Kunkel Specialized Learning Center. Linda Kunkel was a longtime educator within BISD and the first diagnostician at Shannon.

The Griggs and Kunkel complex is scheduled to open in January 2025, with the official ribbon cutting in December 2024.

The District will determine the future of the aging Shannon facility.

VASE Competition Logo

Texas VASE (Visual Arts Scholastic Event) celebrated its 30th Anniversary this year. In the inaugural year, the contest was held in Houston with a total of 200 entries. The event is now held in San Marcos with over 33,000 entries at the Regional Level, with 2,300 works advancing to State! The pinnacle of artistic success is the Gold Seal Recognition. Birdville ISD had five students recognized for 2024.

Another of our students, Ida Wepngong, advanced to state and was awarded the Dr. Jim Henderson Memorial Scholarship for $500. Dr. Henderson was the founding father of this competition and it is a great honor that Ida’s artwork was chosen for this scholarship.  We are proud of our talented artists in Birdville ISD!

Solar Eclipse: Transportation Update

As we prepare for the total eclipse on Monday, April 8, Birdville ISD wants to remind parents of the anticipated increase in visitors to the metroplex to witness this event.

As a result, we expect heavier than usual traffic in and around the District. Please plan accordingly and allow extra time for travel to and from school to ensure the safe drop-off and pick-up of your children.

For students who ride the bus, we appreciate your patience as our bus drivers navigate potential delays due to increased traffic. On Monday afternoon, campus staff will provide students the opportunity to use restroom facilities before boarding the bus, prioritizing their safety and comfort during the ride home.
