BISD\u2019s board of trustees met in a special meeting on Monday, March 8 to discuss the District\u2019s current procedure requiring the wearing of face masks in all District facilities. This meeting resulted from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) Commissioner Mike Morath\u2019s recent update of the public health guidance for schools as it relates to wearing masks. The TEA\u2019s guidance maintains all previous mask requirements in schools and provides an option for local school boards\u00a0to\u00a0adjust these requirements for their own school districts.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clarification regarding masks at school:<\/strong> The Texas Education Agency\u2019s (TEA\u2019s) SY 20-21 Public Health Planning Guidance dated March 4, 2021<\/em> states that mask requirements are still in place. However, these requirements do not apply to any person younger than 10 years of age. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, BISD\u2019s board of trustees voted to continue operating under the District\u2019s existing COVID-19\u00a0prevention protocols implemented in August 2020, including masks except for\u00a0pre-K\u00a0through third grade\u00a0students.\u00a0However, effective <\/em><\/strong>Wednesday, March 10,<\/em>\u00a0pre-K\u00a0through\u00a0third\u00a0grade\u00a0students will\u00a0not<\/strong>\u00a0be required to wear masks in class\u00a0during\u00a0individual student activities. However,\u00a0pre-K\u00a0through\u00a0third\u00a0grade\u00a0students will be required to wear masks in common areas*\u00a0such as\u00a0building\u00a0entrances\u00a0and exits, in the cafeteria before and after eating, in the hallways, etc.\u00a0Any pre-K\u00a0through\u00a0third\u00a0grade\u00a0students wanting to wear a mask\u00a0in class\u00a0will be allowed\u00a0to do so.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the meeting, BISD Superintendent Dr. Darrell Brown announced that elementary playgrounds would reopen after spring break. Students playing outdoors will not be required to wear masks on the playgrounds.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

BISD remains focused on student and staff safety and well-being, and we are encouraged by the progress being made with vaccine availability. Thank you for your continued efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in our community.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n
