Two Birdville ISD eighth-grade social studies teachers have been accepted to attend a week of learning at George Washington’s Mount Vernon home. Elizabeth Cumbie, an eighth-grade teacher at Watauga Middle School, and Mickie Siek, an eighth-grade teacher at North Richland Middle School, were invited to be part of a small group of social studies teachers from across Texas to go to Mount Vernon during spring break. They will attend a week-long exploration of new ways to teach the Constitution, in alignment with our Texas standards. Both were part of a rigorous selection process, which included an essay explaining how George Washington and the 18th-century world is relevant to their teaching, their personal teaching philosophy, and how they can use what they learn to engage and impact their students.

Cumbie will be using her class social media accounts (Instagram: WMSHistory) to engage and interact with students while attending the training.
